Data Backup & Recovery

What is Data Backup & Recovery?

Data backup is the process of creating copies of original files or sources that can then be used to restore the original data following a disaster.

Data recovery refers to the restoration of original data from a backup after the original data has been deleted or corrupted.

Why Is Data Backup & Recovery So Important?

Many traditional businesses are based on acquiring and selling physical inventory. The modern economy is driven more and more by data—in a sense, data is the new inventory. If this data were lost, it would be the equivalent of a catastrophic warehouse fire. Furthermore, physical inventory can almost always be replaced, but often data is irreplaceable. Losing important business data can destroy a company.

A good data backup policy includes regular backups of important data to several media types and to at least one off-site location. Automatic backup systems that remove as many fallible human elements are preferred.

If the worst should occur and data becomes lost, data recovery becomes a potentially business-saving skill. The first attempts involve restoring backups; if these efforts fail, disk analysis tools and techniques can be tried in an attempt to recover some or all of the lost data.
